SCHOOL’S out for learners across the country and while this time is marked by fun and going out, the Department of Basic Education is calling for children to remain safe.

Safety tips

• If the children are home alone ensure the gates are locked.
• Hide all dangerous items like matches and lighters
• Limit screen time and allow for active sessions
• Tell an adult where they are going and what they are doing
• If you are in the mall make sure that children avoid conversations with strangers
• Agree on a meeting point if you get separated
• Report anything suspicious to mall security or staff
• Be home at the time you were asked to be
• Avoid places where there is fighting, alcohol or drugs

How to spend the holidays?

If you are stuck thinking how you can make this short holiday fun and exciting without having to leave the house, try one of the following:

• Take up the sometimes challenging and sometimes easy art of origami
• Build a huge puzzle, which also has numerous benefits for the little ones
• Have special make your own food nights like pizza nights, taco nights or burger nights
• Do fun home experiments like baking soda volcano or making your own slime
• Bring out those classic board games but do not start a family war playing them
• Have a movie marathon rewatching the classics
• Build a fort
• Get the creative juices flowing by learning to draw and paint

There are tons of ways to make the most out of this school holiday season.
