New by-laws to control beachgoers

Municipality clamps down with beach by-law.

THE new municipal Beaches By-law has been implemented to control the behaviour of beach-goers.

Rules are outlined for recreational use, swimming, vehicles, boats, surfing, animals, camping and nuisances and prohibited behaviour.

Activities for which fines could be imposed include littering, swimming in undesignated areas or times, discarding fishing tackle, damaging public property, begging, sleeping and illegally selling goods.

Fines can be up to R40,000, imprisonment for up to two years or both.
