Wentworth police scuppered the plans of a gang of business robbers in Jacobs on Friday morning, 30 October, and arrested all of them following a tip-off.
After receiving information about the planned robbery at about 7.30am, Wentworth police members held observations in the vicinity and saw six armed men enter the premises.
One man was arrested at the scene while the other five fled on foot. A chase ensued and while chasing them, the robbers fired shots at police. All five men were arrested and three unlicensed guns were recovered.
Three of the men were treated by paramedics for injuries sustained as a result of dog bites and razor wire cuts. All aged between 30 and 40, the men will be charged with attempted business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Durban Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2 November.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the swift reaction by the police that led to the arrests. “This arrest shows a strong partnership between the police and the community. We once again emphasise that the community must be the eyes and ears of the police and give valuable information about criminal activities in their areas,” she said.
