Ex-Bluffite among 2016 Olympics swimming judges

Local woman to judge major international competition.

EX-BLUFFITE Brenda Smit is one of 25 international people selected to judge the swimming competition of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Smit, who lived on the Bluff for most of her life, began her judging career about 19 years ago.

“My daughter started swimming and I got involved. Eventually I was judging all over Durban,” said Smit.

She then went on to become a registered Fédération Internationale de Natation (Fina) judge and began judging swimming competitions at international level.

“I judged in Barcelona two years ago and have been involved in all the internationals held in SA since 2004,” said the 53-year-old.

Smit, along with her international compatriots will be in Rio for the Olympic Games from 3 to 15 August, where she will judge all the swimming contests.

“It feels wonderful to be selected and I am so excited to go,” she said.
