Stop and search nets dropped gun

Management of Wentworth SAPS commended the officers for their quick and successful arrest and recovery.

A STOLEN firearm was recovered during a stop and search in Wentworth on Sunday, 7 February.

Wentworth policemen W/O Craig Brigetta and Cnst Errol Ndlovu were patrolling when they noticed a vehicle with five occupants driving unusually slow. The officers flashed their blue lights as a warning for them to stop, which they did. As the occupants were jumping out, W/O Brigetta heard a loud thud coming from the side of one of the passengers.

It was dark, so the officer shone a light on the man and found a pistol had fallen. The firearm was taken in and the 30-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and appeared in court the following day. “The gun will be sent for ballistics testing to check whether it was used in the commission of any crime. Citizens are warned about carrying unlicensed firearms, whoever is caught will be arrested and prosecuted under the Firearm Act and will be given a heavy sentencing. A person who carries a firearm must be in possession of a valid firearm license at all times,” said Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Lt Mabaso Gumede.
