TO address the problem of teen pregnancies, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office has undertaken a teenage pregnancy prevention programme.
According to the SDB ABM office, about one million teenagers fall pregnant each year and the teen pregnancies are on the rise in SA.
This leads to higher numbers of school dropouts and lower education levels. Along with other partners, the SDB ABM plans to tackle this issue among the youth of South Durban.
“Needs assessments and regular consultations with councillors have clearly indicated an intervention with our teenage girls is urgently required,” said SDB ABM’s Anitha Govender.
SDB ABM office manager, Eurakha Singh added that it is vital meaningful and sustainable intervention is implemented to impact on the young girls’ lives.
“We welcome this initiative by the South Durban Basin ABM. Teenage pregnancy is a huge challenge for the Education Department and it impacts negatively on the teenager’s life and schooling career,” said Department of Education youth and gender directorate, Nokujabula Senwamade.
