Santaco still debating taxi fare increase

Santaco is still discussing whether or not there will be an increase in taxi fares following the fuel price hike.

THE South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) have been placed in a difficult position as they debate whether taxi fares will increase following the recent fuel price hike. At this point the council said that commuters should not stress as no decision has been made.

Ongoing meetings

The council held a National Office Bearers meeting in Kempton Park yesterday afternoon, where the council said they will need to have further consultations before making their decision.

Rebecca Phala, Santaco spokesperson, said they are actively developing a solution that benefits both commuters and operators.

“As part of the consultations, Santaco will engage its industry members to assess the impact of the fuel price increases, while also engaging fuel suppliers and business partners on possible cushioning measures that could be achieved through the industry’s collective buying power,” said Phala.

The council hopes to speak with the Department of Transport and government to discuss measures that can mitigate the impact of the fuel price hike.

The Santaco national executive committee is set to meet today for further discussions.

“At this stage, SANTACO is making no announcement regarding possible taxi fare increases,” said Phala.

Fuel price hike

The fuel price skyrocketed this month with a huge impact on many motorists.

The prices for fuel for October are:

  • Petrol 93- R29.88
  • Petrol 95- R30.25
  • Diesel (Coast)- R32.89

This marks the highest amount paid for petrol in the country’s history.
