Man dies, 17 hurt in rush hour taxi crash

Emergency services find injured passengers scattered across M4

A TAXI crash during rush hour on Wednesday evening, 23 March claimed the life of one passenger and injured another 17 on the M4 southbound, just after the Quality Street off-ramp.

At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, emergency services and paramedics who responded to the scene found injured passengers scattered across the busy highway.

A fully laden taxi had lost control and collided with the barriers before overturning, eventually coming to rest on its side.

A man believed to be in his thirties had suffered severe injuries and had died before paramedics’ arrival. He was declared deceased at the scene. A further 17 people had suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious and were stabilised before being transported to various Durban hospitals.

It is unclear what caused the crash. Police were on the scene to investigate.
