Police laud car guard for thwarting car thieves

Juan’s heroic effort showcased that car guards should be taken seriously

A BLUFF car guard who fought off two would-be car thieves was given a certificate of appreciation by Brighton Beach SAPS in honour of his commitment to duty.

During the evening of Sunday, 26 June, Nogada SA’s Juan Pienaar was working in the parking lot at Bluff Towers when he saw two people arrive in a Toyota Hi-Ace.

Pienaar saw men behaving suspiciously and so he noted the vehicle registration number and watched them. He realised they were the same pair who had previously been there in a red Toyota Tazz.

While he watched, he saw the duo fidgeting with the door of a parked car and he believed they intended to steal it. Pienaar moved in to stop them and was pulled into the Toyota.

A fight ensued as he tried to get out of the vehicle. With a final push, Pienaar managed to escape and one of the men was left holding his torn car guard jacket before they sped away.

Brighton Beach SAPS circulated the vehicle registrations of the two cars used by the men and they came up false.

“During a prize giving ceremony, Brighton Beach station commander Colonel Carel Grobler handed over a certificate of appreciation to Juan and praised him for his bravery and preventing a property related crime from being committed.

He also received a solar powered multi torch and whistle to assist him during night shift guarding duties.

Brighton Beach SAPS management appreciates Juan’s heroic effort which showcased that car guards should be taken seriously, and have a role to play in fighting crime, just like every responsible community member,” said media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

In addition to the certificate, a local security company also rewarded his good deed.

“We commend Juan Pienaar for his perseverance and bravery, and therefore Security Force management want to reward him with a R500 gift certificate,” added Security Force operations manager, Kival Singh.
