JUST IN: Fire at refinery injures five

Engen responds to explosion claims.

REPORTS of an explosion at Engen Refinery sent South Durban residents into a frenzy this morning.

The incident happened shortly after 1.30am this morning, 21 September.

“A minor fire occurred when scheduled maintenance work was being carried out at the Engen Refinery. The refinery was not operational at the time of the incident.

There were no fatalities. There were five injuries; three people were treated and discharged and two were admitted to hospital for further treatment.

The fire was extinguished within five minutes by the refinery’s fire-fighting team,” read a statement from the refinery.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but an investigation is underway.

“Engen sincerely regrets any concern caused by the fire. Engen’s priority in dealing with all incidents is to always ensure the safety of its people and the surrounding community, while minimising the environmental impact.”
