One dead, 16 hurt as taxi and cars collide
Taxi came to rest on its side after colliding with two cars at about 10.20pm
One person was killed and 16 others were injured after a taxi and two cars collided on the M4 South near the Himalayas Road off-ramp at Merebank on Friday night at about 10.20pm.
Rescue Care paramedics found the taxi had overturned, coming to rest on its side. Some of the passengers had been ejected from the taxi on impact and sustained serious injuries. One man sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene.
Another 16 people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious. They were all stabilised and transported by ambulances to various Durban hospitals. The cause of the collision is unknown, however police were at the scene and will investigate.
The freeway was closed while emergency personnel cleared the scene.
