Woodlands WI 56th birthday prize-giving lauds competitive crafters

WOODLANDS Women’s Institute (WWI) celebrated its 56th birthday and held its prize-giving on Friday, 5 May.

President of the institute, Maureen Lavis opened the meeting and welcomed all members and visitors including members of sister institutes, Stainbank and Yellowwood Park Evening WIs.

After reciting the Mary Stewart Collect, Maureen thanked the committee, judge Linda Melson, and other members for doing duty, helping out in the running of the institute. They were given small gifts of appreciation. Special thanks go to Martie Caldwell for the beautifully iced and decorated birthday cake topped with intricately crafted orchids.

Prize-giving, with trophies and small monetary gifts being presented to deserving competition winners, was followed by yummy snacks at tea time, after which musical entertainment was provided by Fanie. Many members took to the dance floor. Birthdays for the month were announced and raffles and money board winners were drawn. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the morning a great success.

• Best rose (BE Coetzee trophy): First Phyllis Parsonage, second Sandra Naidoo, third Barbara Kruger.
• Best specimen (BE Coetzee trophy) First Phyllis Parsonage, second Linda Gibbs, third Sandra Naidoo.
• Best orchid (Rose Bowl trophy): First Linda Gibbs, second Koulla Tsouris, third Phyllis Parsonage.
• Merit (Work of the Month trophy): First Valerie Wagner, second, Hazel Demé, third Koulla Tsouris.
• Most points (Barbara Potgieter trophy): First Koulla Tsouris, second Barbara Kruger, third Sheila Mathieson.
• Most entries – Hazel Message trophy: First Koulla Tsouris, second Barbara Kruger, third Sheila Mathieson.
• Woman of the Year trophy: Hazel Demé.
• Lamp of Learning trophy: Sheila Mathieson.
• Most improved member trophy: Barbara Endres.
• President’s prize: Sheila Mathieson.

Maureen congratulated all prize winners and mentioned there was an average of 45 competition entries each month and encouraged more members to enter. Special thanks went to the hardworking judge.

Maureen closed the meeting with the reciting of the Women’s Institute Prayer and a reminder to members to take unwanted goods in good condition to the meeting this Friday, 9 June. The goods will be sold at the Tafta fete on Saturday, 5 August to raise much-needed funds for the Southern Hills Group of FWI.
