Purr with delight this International Cat Day

TO all the feline fans out there – today is International Cat Day.

The day was established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). So why not give a little extra attention or a tasty treat to your fur child in celebration?

Coincidentally, the Southern African Cat Council hosts its cat of the year (COTY) competition this weekend in Cape Town.

Compass Cares and Cats of Durban launched their 2018 Cats of Durban ‘kitten edition’ calendar today in commemoration of the day.

According to fayettehumane.org, a cat can give birth to two to three litters per year with an average of one to eight kittens in a litter. This means thousands of kittens born to stray cats go without homes, food and love. Every R500 raised through the sale of the calendars pays for the sterilisation of a cat.

In honour of International Cat Day, here are some interesting facts about cats from factretriever.com:

• A cat’s hairball is called a bezoar.
• When chasing prey cats keep their heads level unlike dogs and humans who move their heads up and down.
• Cats can make about 100 different sounds compared to a dog’s range of about 10.
• The collective term for a group of cats is a clowder.
• Cats have a top speed of just under 50kph.
• Cats are able to jump about five times their height.
