There have been increasing reports of this in the Montclair area with residents falling victim to vehicle theft or having their vehicles tampered with due to the blocking of the signal between a vehicle and its lock remote.
Montclair communications officer, captain Dereck Vijiam, confirmed that although this crime has not spiraled out of control, it is a growing issue in the policing precinct and that several incidents have been noted by the station.
“Our local shopping centres are the main hot-spots for remote jamming as it is the easiest place for criminals to target people and gain access to their vehicles. One can never be too safe therefore people need to be aware of their surroundings at all times and exercise extra precaution when parking and locking their vehicles,” he said.
Vijiam further recommends these helpful tips to avoid being a victim of this crime:
- Make sure you allocate a few extra seconds to confirm that your vehicle is locked before walking away.
- Keep your valuables out of plain sight to avoid attracting potential thieves from breaking into your vehicle.
- Install a tracker. By having a tracker system in your vehicle you make it likelier to be recovered in the event that it is stolen.
