Diarise Wentworth bowls fun day
The community is invited to diarise Saturday, 10 August, and attend a fun day at Wentworth Bowling Club
Last week saw a flurry of activity on the Wentworth Bowling Club greens.
Amelia and Wayne Booysen treated the bowlers to a warm welcome, delicious apple tart and cream after play. Interested in trying your hand a lawn bowls? Contact Margaret on 082-961-8538 for details.
Thursday morning, 25 July, saw the playing of the monthly WBC breakfast trips. After enjoying a hearty breakfast, Brian and Paula Osman, playing with Wesley Hayes, showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels to take first spot with a convincing four plus 14. In second place were Kenny London, Phil Hill and Russell Fuller with 3+5. Kurt Spack, Tom Cloete and Harvey Simpkins took home the second session prize.
In the Tomasina men’s casual bowls played on Friday morning, 26 July, Graham Bransby, Dave Carroll and Norman Webster accumulated a solid +22 to win for the day. Robin de Gouveia, Robbie Carr and Derrick Stevens were four shots behind, in second place. The sportsmen’s prize went to Gerald C Royle, Helmut Brutti and Ivor Aylward.
On Sunday, 28 July, regular attendees in the Grand Rapid big Jim any pairs competition gathered to do battle for the sponsored prizes. With a score of 4+18, Ben Newton and Luvuyo Ndava scooped the first prize. They were followed by in form Elize Stapelberg and Phyllis Maritz who, after winning the women’s winter tournament in Amanzimtoti with Dawn Spack and Wendy Westwood, had two resounding wins on Sunday to take second spot with 4+15. The second session prize went to Dave Carroll and Helmut Brutti.
The men’s fours final posted for Saturday afternoon, 27 July, had to be postponed due to the unexpected passing of Moses Nuba’s mother and he was required to return home to be with the family. The members extend sincere condolences to their green staff member. This final has been rescheduled to take place on Friday, 2 August, at 9am. Wentworth Bowling Club invites registered bowlers to participate in the monthly Grand Rapid Spur pairs at 9am on Wednesday morning, 31 July. Due to the morning’s games the promotion and development bowls will not be held, but regulars are welcome to put a tab in and arrange their own challenge games.
The community is invited to diarise Saturday, 10 August, and attend a fun day at Wentworth Bowling Club to raise funds for Troy Garland and his Port Natal Bowls under 30 team who will travel to Gauteng in September to participate in the Bowls South Africa inter-district under 30 tournament. Plenty of fun that includes casual bowls, games for kids, photographs with Miss WBC and a pub quiz, is planned. Take the opportunity to try your hand at the game and thereby support a local sportsman’s achievements. Fred’s Kitchen will conjure up some exciting specials to feed the hungry.
