Detective secures 10-year conviction for house robbery suspect

A HOUSE robber in Wentworth finally met his fate when he received a 10-year sentence for the crime he committed in 2018. The 27-year-old man was charged and appeared at the Durban Regional Court. After a few remands, he was found guilty on Thursday, 20 February.

According to Wentworth SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, in July 2018 at about 2pm, the owner of the house had left to drop a friend off and 10 minutes later, he returned to find a man carrying a bag containing possessions from the house he had broken into.

“The suspect then drew a knife after seeing the complainant who had to step out of the way since the suspect threatened to stab him. The suspect fled the scene on foot with the bag full of items stolen from the house. The complainant then chased after the suspect and eventually caught up with him. The suspect dropped the bag and ran away. The complainant then decided to proceed to the police station to open a criminal case which was assigned to Det-W/O Walter Marais to investigate,” said captain Gumede.

Station commander Col Willem Van Zyl together with the branch commander Lt-Col Dale Duke commended the detective for securing the arrest and ensuring that the accused was sentenced and put behind the bars for committing a serious crime.
