Deloitte marathon sees runners from far and wide

The challenge this year was slightly re-routed to accommodate the construction and on the M4.

THE Dolphin Coast Striders in partnership with Deloitte, hosted the Deloitte Challenge on Sunday, 15 March.

This Comrades Marathon qualifier saw running clubs from all over the country compete in a race dubbed a must for all KZN runners’ calendar.

The race consisted of a range of distances between 42.2km, 21.1km half marathon, 10km run and a 5km fun run all of which started at the Amphitheatre on the Durban Promenade.

The challenge this year was slightly re-routed to accommodate the construction and on the M4.

Runners were taken through a short loop of the Kings Park area then out to Umhlanga on the M4 under a road closure, with a straight shot finish down the promenade.

According to the organisers, this format was flatter and faster than their traditional point-to-point route which avoided the Tongaat, Umdloti and Umhlanga lagoons, and with earlier starts.

Water points were also placed strategically to ensure that runners didn’t cross over the road to assist those who were chasing fast qualifying times or personal bests.
