‘Hop into the heart’ of an elder this Easter
Tafta appeals to its donors, supporters and the general public to consider its elders and the tiny budget on which they have to meet their basic needs.
DURING the month of Human Rights, The Association for the Aged (Tafta) hopes to cast a spotlight on the funding gap created between the state pension of R1890 (as of 1 August 2021) received by elders and the cost of living for an older person.
The general cost of living has been greatly impacted by the recent global pandemic which led to an economic crisis. Everything costs more including the basics of accommodation, groceries, transport and health care.
Tafta appeals to its donors, supporters and the general public to consider its elders and the tiny budget on which they have to meet their basic needs. According to Dignity Foundation, older persons should have access to adequate food, water, shelter, clothing and health care through the provision of income, family and community support and self-help. Access to health care is critical for the elders to maintain an optimum level of physical, mental and emotional well-being.
“Very often we have been asked by individuals how they can help us, the ‘Hop into a Heart’ campaign affords everyone the opportunity to get involved in protecting our elders and fulfilling their right to dignity. Members of the public can transform into Easter bunnies spreading joy and happiness in the form of an Easter hamper with basic toiletries and a small Easter treat.
“After the recent increase of R30 in the state pension, our elders still find it difficult to meet their basic needs. At Tafta; a portion of an elder’s pension goes toward their care, leaving very little budget for hygiene and personal items. Tafta steps in to provide these items through fundraising and acquisition of donations. This month we invite communities and corporates to assist us in providing basic toiletries and sweet treats to our elders in celebration Easter and Human Rights month,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.
Hop into the heart of an elder at Tafta this Easter by providing essential items on their toiletry wish list that meet their basic needs, and make them smile with a sweet treat of a hot cross bun or Easter egg. These gifts can be provided to an elder in need through your sponsorship or hosting of a collection drive.
