Montclair musician set to release new track
DJ and hip-hop artist Victoria Tembe, popularly known as DeeJaVee, is set to release her first track for the year.
MULTI-GENRE DJ and hip-hop artist Victoria Tembe, popularly known as DeeJaVee, is set to release her first track for the year.
After the success of her song ‘Peach Emoji’ in December and reaching high rotation on Channel O and MTV Base, she created another banger, ‘Ghostship’. She teamed up with fellow vocalist, GFunk from Bluff and the song will be released on Friday, 4 June along with the music video which was shot at uShaka Marine World.
Asked what inspired her new song, she said, “I felt that it is important to encourage women to be the author of their own lives. Own their situations and decisions they make but live an authentic and happy life. I worked with artist and lyricist Smaxxx and featured vocalist, G-Funk, both from the creative collective 100% Uncutt.”
Her style of music can be described as ‘90s era hip-hop on a new wave bass line’. “My style is relatable lyrics with punch line over punch line. Not just random words in your ear.”
The Montclair born and bred musician said it was her family that inspired her love and passion for music.
“My mother was a part of the praise and worship team at our church. My father on the other hand was heavily influenced by commercial music and listening to Notorious B.I.G and Jay-Z which ultimately led me to my love of hip-hop music.”
After being unfulfilled in the corporate world of IT she took the leap of faith and ventured into Deejaying in Johannesburg.
“I began my DJ career playing nationally, which evolved into making my music. One of my biggest breaks was during lockdown where I had the opportunity to play on Channel O’s Lockdown House Party. I had just released an AfroHouse song with Phindy Dube, former Idols contestant, titled ‘ DeJaVee – Wena (ft Phindy Dube)’ which gained momentum and was played in Botswana, Namibia and America. I was then asked to come back for the second season,” said DeeJaVee.
The talented musician is currently in the studio working on her E.P and exploring hip-hop in different genres. “I am also working with upcoming artists from Durban and expanding myself as a female hip-hop artist,” she said.
