WATCH: Fires and mayhem as violent protests hit Montclair
Ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter confirmed the civil unrest in the area and looting at Montclair Mall.
MONTCLAIR is in a current state of pandemonium met with screaming crowds and burning tyres obstructing traffic on Wood Road, outside Montclair Mall on Monday, 12 July.
It is alleged that the protests are sparked by the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma but the South African Police Service (SAPS) suspects that criminal opportunism has taken over the protests.
Ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter confirmed the civil unrest in the area and looting at the mall. “There are reports of incidents of looting throughout the area. There have also been allegations of looting at a service station in Montclair Road, Shoprite in Montclair as well as a bottle store in Woodlands. The police are spread extremely thin in the area and are doing all that can to manage the situation,” he said.
Hegter calls for calm in the community amid the turmoil. He also explained that community members of Yellowwood Park have also taken the initiative to stand outside Yellowwood Park Spar in an effort to ward off any protesters mobilising towards the premises.
Montclair Police communications officer, Captain Derek Vijiam confirmed that police have been sent out to main roads, including South Coast Road, to control the unrest.
Shopping centres and other public facilities remain closed throughout the Durban South region.
