‘KnitWits for Madiba’ donates blankets to Tafta residents
KZN Ambassador for 67 Blankets, Susan Eslick said the regional group made 150 blankets, and stitch by stitch, their pledge to keep thousands of people warmer is fulfilled.
WHAT started out as a challenge to make 67 blankets for Mandela Day has weaved into yarns of love and cozy winters.
Shortly after the passing of the former statesman in 2013, his PA, Zelda la Grange, presented Carolyn Steyn with the challenge of making 67 blankets by July 18.
The task would prove challenging to do alone and so 67 Blankets for Mandela Day was established.
In keeping the thread going, the KZN group knitted and or crocheted one-hundred blankets and donated them to the Tafta John Dunn House in Wentworth on Friday, July 30.
Susan Eslick said the regional group made 150 blankets and stitch by stitch, their pledge to keep thousands of people warmer is fulfilled.
“Some of these blankets are going to Bulwer, where a local church that does regular outreaches will give them out.”
“We’ll also do our secret scarf mission which we do every year, normally for Madiba’s birthday. It was delayed this year because of Covid-19 numbers going up.”
“We usually hang scarfs on trees and the needy help themselves as they pass by. It has been going on for about six years now. It’s been phenomenal to be part of the journey,” she said.
Erica Bothma was elated for Tafta residents.
“Thank you very much, we really appreciate it. It’s been a really cold winter in Durban this year and I think the elderly will really appreciate it. Thank you for the time and effort the organisation put in to make this donation possible,” she said.
