Community amped as new gym opens on the Bluff
After a two year wait, fitness enthusiasts can finally look forward to the newly constructed open-air community gym situated at Bayview Sports Club.
AFTER a two year wait, fitness enthusiasts can finally look forward to the newly constructed open-air community gym situated at Bayview Sports Club.
The gym was officially opened on Thursday, 12 August.
“It took nearly two years to get this project off the ground but fortunately when it did, it didn’t the construction and installation didn’t take very long. We’re excited to have it in this particular area because people work out and exercise here a lot. I’m glad they chose this part of the Bluff as this is where a majority of the community wanted it. Being a community gym, the city was quite open to heeding to that appeal,” said ward 66 councillor Zoe Solomon.
She shared that her main concern was that the equipment is made of metal which is desirable for theft. “But we have committed community members and the groundskeeper at the club who have come forward to help ensure that the facility is kept in good condition and that the surrounding area is cleared of overgrown bushes.
“The response from the community has been positive. The community are claiming the facility. It is a free gym that offers a real workout. Not everyone can afford to pay gym membership fees and I think it’s going to be well used,” said Solomon.
Eager to be one of the first few to give the new equipment a go were Bluff residents, Nhlonipho ‘Sniper’ Shandu and Caitlyn George. “It’s nice to have a public gym here on the sports grounds. We’re really into fitness so this makes maintaining a healthy lifestyle so much more convenient for us,” they said.
