Montclair vet succumbs to Covid-19 complications on daughter’s birthday
A familiar and friendly face to many in the community, the compassionate vet leaves a void in many animal lovers’ hearts.
HEARTFELT messages poured in on social media from residents who are still reeling in shock following the passing of popular Montclair Animal Hospital surgeon, Dr Omashini Govender.
A familiar and friendly face to many in the community, the compassionate vet, who died on Monday, August 16, leaves a void in many animal lovers’ hearts.
Omashini and her husband, Yesh owned the veterinary.
The couple were known and admired for their kind-heartedness and generosity. It is believed that she succumbed to Covid-19 related complications on the fateful day, tragically coinciding with her daughter’s seventh birthday.
Close friend, Priya Naidoo who runs PB Paw and Rescue Montclair and YWP described her as one of the kindest and gentlest souls one could ever meet. “I met her in 2005 and had the pleasure of having her as our local surgeon. This is a huge loss to everyone. There are no words to express my grief. It is the biggest loss to the animals of Durban. I pray for the comfort of our God over her husband, Yesh, their children and family. Omashini, you will always remain our number one. Such a beautiful soul will never be forgotten,” she said.
PB Paw and Rescue Montclair and YWP extended its condolences: “She spent her life saving our animals and for that we are truly grateful. She was the angel who walked among us, who always greeted with a smile no matter how hectic her day was. Above all of this, she was an amazing wife and a mother to two beautiful young children and she shared herself between them and her second home and family at Montclair Animal Hospital. Omashini, your passing has devastated us we will never forget you, we have lost a family member, we will love you forever,” the animal organisation said.
Montclair resident, Linda Young shared that she had a close relationship with the Govenders and would often take her dogs to their vet. “They’re very loyal and kind people. Omashini would help anybody. Her staff sings her praises all the time. I had just baked a cake for them recently as a token of thanks for always helping me and my babies even when I was struggling financially. It was devastating to hear the news and is a great loss to our community. She always had a smile on her face and was such a delightful person to talk to,” she said.
Omashini died at the age of 39 and is survived by her husband and two children. Her funeral will be held at her Westville residence on Wednesday, 18 August under the necessary Covid-19 restrictions.
The Montclair Animal Hospital staff is deeply saddened by the loss. “Omashini will always be loved by us, she was the most beautiful and passionate lady to walk the earth. We will keep her legacy going by spreading the love. She was a saint and now is an angel,” they said.
The veterinary remains closed, with hopes to re-open on Thursday, August 19. Emergencies are to be referred to Westville Animal Hospital on 031 267 8000.
