Body found in flooded basement at Clairwood hotel
Metro Police Durban Search and Rescue together with Montclair SAPS were called out to attend the scene on Wednesday afternoon, August 18.
A BODY was found in Clairwood’s popular, Moon Hotel on Wednesday afternoon, August 18 after a fire broke out in the building a few days prior.
Metro Police Durban Search and Rescue, Montclair SAPS along with other role players were called out to attend the scene and recover a body from the hotel’s basement, situated on South Coast Road.
“An inquest docket is being investigated by Montclair SAPS. It is alleged that on August 15 a fire gutted a hotel on South Coast Road causing flooding in the basement. While the contractors were busy pumping water out of the flooded basement, they discovered a body floating in the water. The body of an unknown male was recovered. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
Moon Hotel owner, Rajen Bhagwandeen said he believed the cause of fire was arson and is awaiting post-mortem results to determine the cause of death of the deceased. Bhagwandeen added that he was not aware of the extent of the damage to the building as a quantity surveyor is yet to be appointed by his insurance company to assess the cost of damages.
