Merewent Cheshire Home to gain international expertise

Ingrun Baron is a retired nurse who has worked in disability health care for over 10 years.

The Merewent Cheshire Home, recently welcomed its international volunteer, Ingrun Baron from Germany as part of the Senior Experten Service (SES).

SES is Germany’s leading volunteering organisation for experts and executives who are either retired or taking some time off work. The organisation has been helping people to help themselves since 1983 throughout the world, in every industry and sector.

Baron is a retired nurse who has worked in disability health care for over 10 years and has taken the opportunity to offer support and expertise to the home’s nursing staff.

Her focus is on the identification of improvement methods, expansion of expertise and training in primary healthcare, dealing with patients and improving the treatment level.

Ingrun Baron from Germany has taken the opportunity to offer support and expertise to the Merewent Cheshire Home’s nursing staff.

”The target of the assignment is to increase the professional competence of the staff in the field of patient care to provide improved primary healthcare. I have been at the home for six weeks. The first two weeks were a bit wasted because there was a lot of demand on each staff member to attend to the residents or their different tasks. With the Covid-19 pandemic, staff also have increased challenges. However, it has since been going well and I have been enjoying my time here especially working with the new manager, Winnie Mkhize. She is easy to work with her and has a passion for the work she does in caring for the residents,” said Baron.

She also noted differences between Germany and South Africa, highlighting that limited resources was a stumbling block in the progress of the home but remains hopeful of the staff’s dedication.

The Merewent Cheshire Home’s objective is to work in partnership with people with disabilities to provide residential accommodation and services that promote independent living and the pursuit of personal aspirations.

The organisation also aims to initiate projects that address social and economic inequalities, thereby alleviating poverty and facilitating the social integration of people with disabilities into mainstream society.
