Health minister dismisses claims that vaccine causes impotence, infertility

The Kwazulu-Natal health department says the number of people who have been vaccinated in the province is extremely low.

KWAZULU-NATAL Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane says it cannot be proven that the Covid-19 vaccine causes infertility or affect sexual performance, and is therefore encouraging those who are unvaccinated because they believe this information, to get the jab.

According to the department last week, some men had opted not to get the vaccine due to “unfounded fears that their sexual performance will diminish”. It also stated that women seem to believed they would become infertile should they get the jab.

Speaking out against these widespread myths at a vaccination drive in the province, MEC Simelane said the number of people who have been vaccinated in the province is extremely low.

“We have found that there’s quite a number of myths and misconceptions that are making the rounds, and the majority of them are coming from social media platforms.

She added that some believe that many have died from the vaccination; which has not been scientifically proven.

“Others believe that when you get vaccinated you are not going to have children, that’s mostly with the younger generation. Others, particularly the males, believe that if you get vaccinated you then become impotent, which, again, couldn’t be further from the truth,” she added.

“They’ll be visiting their different districts and engage with communities through the different sectors, including amakhosi, the religious sector, traditional health practitioners and the business community,” added the MEC.
