THE SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Level 2 Impact-Based Warnings for damaging winds and waves from today (August 27) until August 28.

In a statement, eThekwini Municipality urged residents to remain vigilant and take precautions.

The conditions are expected to affect the KZN coastline from Thursday afternoon through to the early hours of Friday.

“Strong southerly to south-westerly winds averaging between 30km/h and 40km/h, gusting up to 70km/h, are expected along the coast, with significant wave heights of between 4m and 4.5m,” eThekwini said in a statement.

The severe conditions may result in fallen trees, infrastructure damage and transport disruptions.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary activity near the coastline.

“Motorists should exercise caution on exposed roads, bridges and coastal routes, where flying debris and falling trees may pose a safety risk,” said eThekwini in a statement.

Beachgoers, anglers and ocean users are urged to stay away from beaches, coastal rocks, piers and shoreline areas.

Mariners and operators of small to medium-sized vessels are advised not to venture into the open sea and to seek safe harbour until conditions improve.

Emergency response teams from across the City are on high alert and on standby to clear fallen trees, debris and blocked stormwater infrastructure, and to assist affected communities.

This warning remains subject to change and the City continues to monitor the situation closely.
