Dancers ready to dazzle audiences at festival

ALL set to mesmerize audiences, talented wheelchair dancers from Bluff and Wentworth are enthusiastic about being given a platform to showcase their skills during the Durban Dance Movement Festival, which will be held at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on July 22 and 23.

Geoff Cafun, Kyle Bowles and Leah Essen, who share mutual sentiments of excitement, said they are thankful for the skills they have developed to perform at the festival, as there are minimal opportunities for those living with disabilities in society.

“The festival provides us with a platform to showcase our talents and skills, despite our disabilities. The Covid-19 pandemic negatively hit the world by storm, but the struggle for artists in South Africa were compounded by the corruption and mismanagement of Covid-19 relief funds which were meant to assist artists during this time. These performances are a voice for the voiceless and are those that audiences can identify with.
Choreographed by Jarryd Watson, the performances portray the difficulties, inequalities, and violation of artists rights during the Covid-19 period.

“We are glad that the festival finally returns to our local shores with its ninth instalment. The impact of Covid-19 robbed the arts industry of live shows and theatres with the restrictions, but with the current bans lifted, we are happy to see the festival returning with an explosive variety of dance genres to our Durban audiences,” said Watson.

In association with the c and administered under Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation, the festival will host three dance productions that will showcase hip hop, contemporary, African, jazz, break dancing and amapiano dance from various dance studios, dance crews and groups from all over KZN.
“I’m so excited that the festival will return to theatre this year and promises to be bigger and better. The dancers are so eager to get back on stage to showcase their talents and skills audiences will bein for treat with what we have to offer this year. The opening night of the festival will also showcase performances from the inclusive disabled dance program run by Dance Movement that will feature 11 wheelchair bound dancers performing two dance works entitled Forgotten Promises and Move, make some space.
