Prepare for an ‘Out of this World’ experience at this year’s Durban July
After seeing the Preview Fashion Show at the Gateway Shopping Centre on Friday, the organisers of the Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars Collection and the Invited Designer Showcase believe that people are in for a great fashion experience this weekend.
CHIC, slick and stylish was the succinct summing up of Gateway’s Hollywoodbets Durban July (HDJ) Preview Fashion Show at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Friday, June 23.
The show was attended by the who’s who of the KZN fashion world to see the best glitz and glamour from current and future designers as they presented their interpretations of the Out of this World theme for next weekend’s Hollywoodbets Durban July.
The show featured the entries of the 10 student finalists in the HDJ Young Designer Award competition, as well as designs from the Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) Rising Stars Collection and the Invited Designer Showcase. All three of these will be prominent at the main Celebration Stage on July 1.

Friday’s showcase also included stunning ready-to-wear fashion from Gateway retailers.
“Once again, we have been treated to another round of spectacular fashion at Gateway’s Hollywoodbets Durban July Preview Fashion Show,” said Steve Marshall, Gold Circle’s events and marketing executive, adding that he thinks the ‘Out of this World’ theme has been a winner for fashion this year.
“We have seen some incredible designs from the professional designers in the Invited Designer Showcase, as well the progressive DFF Rising Stars and the Young Designer students. The theme allows for such a vast range of interpretations, and so designers have really let their creative juices flow. I think we are in for a great fashion experience next weekend.
“After seeing all these designs, I cannot wait to see what the public come up with for the various Hollywoodbets Durban July Raceday Fashion Experience competitions. I think the most striking couple, classic and exceptional designs are going to be ‘Out of this World’,” he said.
After watching the show last night, Vuyi Ngobese from the Hollywood Foundation believes the future of the fashion industry in South Africa is on a sound footing.
“After this evening’s spectacular showcase, I am confident the fashion industry in South Africa has determined creatives who will contribute to the sustainability of the clothing and textiles sector. The participants of the Young Designer Award and the DFF Rising Stars are forces to be reckoned with, and the Hollywood Foundation is behind them all the way.”
