Army deployed amid Durban CBD unrest
The municipality intends to clean the affected streets, assist affected businesses and conduct safety assessment of municipal infrastructure.
THE members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are set to support police operations in Durban following protests marked by violence, looting and the destruction of vehicles and property.
The deployment announced by national government comes after unrest disrupted commuters, informal traders, small businesses and essential services in the City earlier this week.
eThekwini Municiplaity said in a statement the deployment will prioritise the safety of the people living, trading and working in the City.

Mayor of eThekwini Municiplaity Cyril Xaba condemned the violence and destruction of property, while acknowledging residents’ Constitutional right to engage in peaceful protest.
The municiplaity confirmed that it was working to restore affected public spaces and support businesses and informal traders impacted by the unrest.
