Global Recycling Day: Celebrating recycling heroes

Recycling reduces waste sent to landfills and incinerators – find out how to recycle properly.

AS Global Recycling Day 2024 unfolds today (March 18), the spotlight shines brightly on recycling heroes – individuals, communities, businesses and initiatives – demonstrating the profound impact of recycling on building a sustainable planet and securing a greener future for all.

This year’s theme, championed by the Global Recycling Foundation, celebrates the extraordinary contributions of these heroes in advancing recycling efforts worldwide.

In a world grappling with environmental challenges, recycling heroes stand as beacons of hope, showcasing the transformative power of recycling in mitigating climate change, reducing waste and conserving natural resources. Their innovative approaches and unwavering commitment serve as inspiration for communities across the globe.

The Global Recycling Foundation said, “Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not-too-distant future, they will run out. That’s why we must think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste but opportunity.”

They also stated that the last decade has been the hottest on record, and we are now facing a climate emergency of unparalleled proportions. They warned the communities of the world: “If we don’t make significant and rapid changes, we will see continued rising global temperatures, the melting of ice caps, continents on fire and rapid deforestation.”

Amid the urgency of the climate crisis, the message of recycling heroes resonates loud and clear – every action counts in the fight for a sustainable future. Whether it’s individuals practising mindful consumption, businesses implementing circular economy principles or policymakers crafting effective waste management policies, we all have a role to play in advancing the recycling agenda.

Here are six recycling tips to help you become a recycling hero this Global Recycling Day:

  1. Absolutely no bags allowed: Plastic bags rank as the top contaminant in recycling loads, wreaking havoc by tangling up machinery and causing shutdowns. Invest in reusable bags and containers to eliminate the need for plastic bags altogether.
  2. The tiny troublemakers: Anything smaller than a credit card spells trouble for recycling. Straws, bottle caps, coffee pods, plastic cutlery, paperclips – the list goes on. These minuscule items can jam recycling equipment and halt operations. Be mindful of what you toss into the recycling bin to avoid causing disruptions.
  3. Clean, empty, dry: Food waste is a major contaminant in recycling loads, rendering them useless and diverting them to landfills. The mantra here is simple: clean, empty and dry. Your recyclables should be clean enough to use again, ensuring they’re free from any residue that could attract pests. Adhere to the clean, empty and dry rule to ensure your recyclables have a chance at being processed.
  4. Say no to mixed materials: Recycling works best when similar materials are grouped together. Items like plastic-coated coffee cups, laminated paper and paper-bubble wrap envelopes can’t be separated, making them destined for the trash. Opt for products with recyclable packaging whenever possible and support local businesses to reduce your carbon footprint.
  5. Say no to wish-cycling: Wish-cycling is putting non-recyclable objects in recycling bins—it does more harm than good. It contaminates entire loads of recyclables, potentially sending them to landfills instead. Avoid wish-cycling at all costs to keep the recycling system running smoothly.
  6. Educate yourself: Recycling isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Items like batteries, electronics and clothing require special instructions for recycling or drop-off centres. Take the initiative to educate yourself further by visiting your local recycling website for specific guidelines.
