Warning over new hijacking trend in Montclair

The police has increased patrols at malls and in residential areas after a spike in carjacking and theft of motor vehicles in the Montclair area.

THE surge of carjacking and theft of vehicles at malls has prompted Montclair police to host a series of campaigns in a bid to raise awareness about the recent criminal activities.

It is alleged that criminals use jamming devices to break into vehicles parked at malls. Sergeant Noma Mnguni from Montclair police said the police has increased patrols at malls and in residential areas after a recent spike in carjacking and theft of motor vehicles in Yellowwood Park.

“Crime prevention members and a security force company held an awareness on carjacking and theft of motor vehicles recently.

“We have noticed a surge in carjacking at malls and theft of motor vehicles in residential areas. In most cases, victims are hijacked while entering their homes. Police received information about the jamming devices that are being used by perpetrators to break into people’s cars.

“We are working on the information received and the police will ensure that the perpetrators of crime are brought to book,” Mnguni said.

She said the police have previously engaged with the community on matters relating to carjacking and theft of motor vehicles.

“Police are making great strides in arresting the suspects linked to carjacking incidents and theft of motor vehicles. We are still working tirelessly to ensure that we root out criminal activities,” Mnguni added.
