The Bluff actress on her way to stardom

Thinking it wouldn't be possible for a girl of colour to pursue an acting career in musical theatre, Roshanda Lewis relishes in performing in KickstArt's upcoming production, Company.

ROSHANDA Shantè Lewis is carving a path in the realm of musical theatre as her remarkable talent is set to shine in KickstArt’s upcoming production, Company, gracing the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in Durban from April 9 to 21.

Originally from The Bluff, Lewis takes on the role of an ex-girlfriend in the midst of love’s intricate dance. Company, she explains, is a mature musical comedy that delves deep into the life of Robert, navigating societal pressures and past romances.

Born in Cape Town and later relocating to The Bluff in 2007, Lewis was immersed in a family steeped in musical prowess, her grandmother fostering a passion for music and performance. Lewis’s journey into musical theatre was sparked in her youth where she found inspiration in classic Bollywood films where the melding of song and drama held her spellbound.

Surrounded by her older brothers, Lewis found solace and inspiration in music, mastering an array of instruments from the guitar, drums, ukulele and keyboard. Her stage presence blossomed during her school years when she starred in productions that ultimately fuelled her decision to pursue theatre academically.

Reflecting on her path, Lewis acknowledges the challenges of breaking societal moulds.

“I never thought it was fully possible for a Coloured girl like me to actively pursue an acting career, especially in musical theatre. Growing up, I didn’t have the opportunity to see many people who looked like me on the big screens. Every time I step on stage, I hope to show other younger or even older girls that they can be anything they want to be,” said Lewis.
