THE eThekwini Municipality’s Health Unit is calling on all members of the public to prioritise their health by proactively getting the flu vaccine as the cold winter season approaches.

In a statement issued on Thursday (May 2), the municipality advised the public to take precautionary measures to safeguard against respiratory infections, which are expected to rise during this period.

Head of the Health Unit Rose van Heerden said the flu virus is at its peak across the country, and the public is encouraged to use the City’s clinics when they have flu symptoms.

“The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is reported to be on the rise nationally. The virus primarily affects young children but can also lead to breathing problems in older individuals. Since the RSV is at its peak, the influenza virus season typically emerges, and we are already observing a rise in cases,” said Van Heerden.

“Most illnesses caused by these viruses are mild but can also result in severe complications and, in some cases, even fatalities,” she said.

This is particularly so in individuals with underlying health conditions that elevate their risk of severe illness. The flu vaccine is readily available at all municipal clinics, and the City encourages vaccination for everyone, particularly those at a higher risk.
