A man accused of killing a Wema Hostel roommate near Montclair appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on August 12.

Mzuvukile Cwele (31) is accused of killing Thobani Khowa (23) at the hostel following an argument over money.

Cwele and Khowa were reportedly sharing a room at the hostel when the incident occurred. It is alleged that after returning to the room, Cwele accused Khowa of stealing his money.

According to the police, the argument escalated and Cwele allegedly assaulted Khowa by striking him repeatedly on the head with a metal pot until he lost consciousness.

Investigating officer Sergeant Thembalakhe Zaca said when the police arrived at the scene, the accused had already left.

“An investigation was launched and Cwele was arrested shortly afterwards. The police investigation revealed that the money that had allegedly been stolen was recovered from a pair of boots in Cwele’s room,” said Zaca.

Cwele is being held at Westville prison while awaiting his next court appearance.
