Footprints: A step in the right direction

The organisation's founder, Shaun Venter, aims to pay it forward and help vulnerable people in The Bluff community.

IN a world where communities grapple with mounting challenges, beacons of altruism and generosity emerge, illuminating paths of hope. Footprints, a non-profit organisation nestled on The Bluff, epitomises a beacon of hope.

Established in 2015 by Shaun and Michielle Venter, Footprints quietly but profoundly impacts the lives of those in need. Its genesis is a tale of resilience and compassion.

Shaun Venter, the organisation’s founder, reflects on their humble beginnings: “In 2014, both Michielle and I lost our jobs within two months due to retrenchment. We found ourselves in a desperate struggle to survive.”

Their plight was alleviated by a friend who provided crucial assistance with food parcels, sustaining their family of four through their darkest hour.

Grateful for the support received during their own adversity, Shaun and Michielle resolved to pay it forward. With donations pouring in from The Bluff community and families across the Durban South area, Footprints officially commenced its mission in 2015.

The name, inspired by the narrative, ‘Footprints in the Sand’, embodies their belief that in times of utmost hardship, humanity carries each other forward.

Shaun elaborates that while Footprints primarily focuses on distributing food parcels to those in need, their assistance transcends mere sustenance. The organisation also gathers household items and furniture, catering to individuals and families deprived of essentials, ranging from clothing and bedding to crockery and cutlery.

“We extend our support, not only to the homeless but also to those who have lost homes, whether due to fire or other circumstances,” Shaun emphasises. “We lend aid to crèches, schools in informal settlements, old age homes and homeless individuals.”

Nevertheless, Footprints grapples with challenges stemming from limited donations. “Our aim is to aid those within our Bluff community, but we extend our hand to other suburbs where assistance is needed,” said Shaun.

For those inclined to support Footprints’ noble cause, the organisation welcomes donations of non-perishable food items, canned goods and household essentials. Interested donors can contact Footprints at 061 466 3081.
