100 years young: The Bluff resident proves age is just a number

Known for her unwavering commitment to fitness and her independent spirit, The Bluff’s Heather Jackson continues to live life to the fullest, even at 100.

THE BLUFF resident Heather Jackson is celebrating a remarkable milestone by turning 100 on September 18. Known for her zest for life and dedication to fitness, Heather continues to live independently, managing her daily exercises, cooking and gardening.

Heather was married to Claude Grandin for 35 years before his passing at 61. She has four children: Viv Atkinson (76), Bev Chadwick (66), Roy Grandin (72) and Clive Grandin (60), as well as nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom are joining her in celebrating this significant birthday.

Born and raised in Griqualand in the Eastern Cape, Heather’s childhood was filled with the simple joys of rural life. Her father was a small-town farmer, and her mother, a dedicated teacher, initially taught Heather and her four siblings at home.

Heather later attended high school, travelling to school by horse daily. She credits these early experiences with instilling the values of hard work and independence.

Heather worked in administration at SA Clothing and pursued her passion for interior design and property reselling alongside her husband. When asked about the secret to her longevity, Heather credits her commitment to exercise. “I started going to the gym after one of my daughters became reluctant to work out. I wanted to prove that if I could do it, so could she. It soon became part of my routine, and I’ve never looked back,” she said.

Heather’s eldest daughter, Viv, fondly remembers playing league tennis matches with her mother. “Our rallies would go on endlessly because neither of us had strong finishing shots, creating memorable matches that lasted forever,” Viv said.

Heather continued playing tennis until 1977 when she broke her ankle on the court. Afterwards, she took up lawn bowling, which she enjoyed until her eyesight began to fade.

Heather’s family describes her as the heart of their close-knit unit. Viv highlights the warmth and connection in their relationships, while her son-in-law, Derek Atkinson, admires the incredible woman Heather is.

“She defies all the stereotypes of ageing. At 100, she still does almost everything with ease. She’s active on WhatsApp and Facebook and reads her daily digital news,” said Derek.

Reflecting on her milestone birthday, Heather shared her thoughts on turning 100. “When I turned 80, I thought, ‘Oh my word, 100 is not far away,’ but over time, as I drew closer, I embraced it,” she said.

Heather believes that age is just a number, and as long as she maintains her health and wellness, she remains content and fulfilled.

As she celebrates her 100th birthday, Heather stands as a testament to a life well-lived, filled with family, fitness and a spirit that continues to inspire those around her.
