A JOINT police operation targeting illegal and unlicensed shebeens in Merewent has led to arrests and the seizure of alcohol and drugs recently.

The operation, conducted by Wentworth police together with other stations from the south of Durban, followed numerous complaints from community members about illegal liquor outlets and a rise in domestic violence incidents linked to alcohol abuse.

Led by Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Cheryl Pillay, officers were first addressed and briefed on the purpose and importance of the operation.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said after the parade members were declared operationally ready and deployed to identified hotspots.

“Police swiftly raided a number of illegal shebeens in the area. The raids resulted in the arrest of both patrons and owners found on the premises. A large volume of alcohol, packed in crates, was confiscated and taken to the police station as exhibits,” said Gumede.

The suspects were charged with dealing in liquor without a valid licence.

Police also recovered dagga that had allegedly been abandoned during the operation.

“In terms of the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Act 6 of 2010, any person selling or dealing in liquor must have a valid licence to operate this type of business,” Gumede added.

Wentworth station commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali described the operation as a major success, adding that such initiatives will continue in an effort to curb crime and restore order in the community.
