YOUNG minds on The Bluff are getting a head start in the digital age thanks to Bluff Academy, a non-profit that provides free coding and robotics classes to inspire a generation of innovators.

Xolani Zondi, founder of Bluff Academy, said that the class was established in 2025 with the vision of making STEM education accessible to young people regardless of their financial circumstances. 

Starts with a challenge

For Xolani, creating the non-profit was a whimsical decision that followed a life-changing experience. 

“Last year, I suffered a massive stroke which had me recovering for quite a long time and in that time, I was worried whether I could take on challenges like I could previously. So, I decided to do a course on coding and robotics through UNISA and the rest is history,” said Zondi.

He had become fully enthralled by the possibilities of the subject and what anyone can do as long as they have the opportunity, which led him to form Bluff Academy.

“What began as a personal test, a way to challenge myself, quickly grew into something more. I found a real passion for it and could not imagine stopping. Now, I see it as a way of giving back and helping children get a head start with skills that will matter later on,” said Zondi.

Weekly classes

The academy held its first classes during the July 2026 school holidays. The programme served as an introduction to coding and robotics. Building on its success, Bluff Academy now holds classes every Saturday at the Fynnland Sports Club hall. 

Through these classes, children take part in hands-on activities, that make learning fun and engaging. Zondi said the goal is not just to teach learners technical skills but also to help them think critically.

Looking to the future, Bluff Academy plans to grow its offerings to include artificial intelligence in their curriculum.
