Public access restricted as Wentworth Hospital closes North gate
A member of the hospital board said the aim is to strengthen security and improve access control within the hospital premises.
THE management of Wentworth Hospital and the board have announced that the hospital’s North gate on The Bluff side will be permanently closed to the public from September 1.
A member of the hospital board, Sidney Govindsamy, said the aim is to strengthen security and improve access control within the hospital premises.

The North gate will only be accessible to the following:
- Ambulances.
- South African Police Service.
- Metro police officers must be on duty, in official State uniform and using an official State vehicle.
- All authorised State vehicles.
- Hospital staff vehicles, during the designated access times, 06:00 to 08:00, 15:45 to 16:30 and 17:45 to 18:30.
Other access routes to the hospital
“All e-hailing drivers must use the South Gate (Wentworth Side) entrance. A maximum period of 10 minutes will be permitted inside the hospital premises for passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. Contractors and delivery vehicles must use the South Gate entrance only and comply with the hospital’s security and access-control requirements,” said Givindsamy.
The South gate remains main public access
According to Govindsamy, the South gate (Wentworth side) will remain open 24 hours a day and will serve as the main public access point to Wentworth Hospital, including access for emergency cases.

He urged the public to familiarise themselves with these new arrangements and to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays or inconvenience.
Govindsamy added, “The co-operation and understanding of all patients, visitors, staff, service providers and members of the community are appreciated as we implement these measures to create a safer and more secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.”
