MEREBANK residents have taken matters into their own hands by cleaning up and excavating an area around the boundary walls of the swimming pools at Bombay Walk, Merebank Shopping Centre.

The initiative brought together community members and ward community leaders who spent the day cleaning their area.

A resident, Pregga Moodley, said ash was used to level the surface and create additional parking space for shoppers.

“The initiative was undertaken by the Merebank Community Centre, Merewest Community Foundation, Merebank Sporting Club and Colours of Bliss. The project was led by Mergan Naidoo and ward committee member Sharin Rajman.The organisers thanked Dhanpal Naidoo of YC Cartage and Gora’s Meat Market for sponsoring the project with a Bobcat and labour,” he said.

Moodley appealed to businesses and residents to help keep the area clean and tidy.

“An appeal to all the organisations and individuals who come to the shopping centre and feed the unfortunate, they must ensure that the area is clean and tidy. All the polystyrene containers must be disposed into big bags,” he added.
