WHAT started as a call about a truck being targeted by armed robbers on the M4 Freeway near Wentworth turned into a foot chase when a security officer stumbled upon two individuals being robbed recently.

According to a statement from Blue Security, the officer noticed two individuals who were being robbed by two armed men.

The officer immediately intervened and pursued the two suspects, who fled on foot towards a nearby sports ground.

“The suspects entered the sports grounds, where the Highway Assist officer pursued them and successfully apprehended one suspect who was found in possession of a firearm. A struggle ensued during the apprehension, resulting in the officer sustaining an injury to his left shoulder. The second suspect managed to evade apprehension and fled the scene,” read the statement.

Tactical Command was immediately notified and additional Blue Security units were dispatched to assist. Wentworth police were also contacted and attended the scene.

• Blue Security Highway Assist
• Blue Security Tactical Unit
• Blue Security Armed Response
• Wentworth SAPS
• ALS Paramedics

“The apprehended suspect was handed over to the police, while the (victims) were advised to open a criminal case. The reported stolen property items included a cellphone, bag and cash,” said Blue Security.

The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital after sustaining an injury to his shoulder.

At the time of publishing, Wentworth police were not immediately available for comment.
