Wentworth grapples with ongoing power outage

According to eThekwini Municipality, the 33/11 kV substation has experienced a total loss of supply on both its incoming circuits.

ALTHOUGH power has been restored to areas supplied by Chamberlain Road Substation, some parts of  Wentworth, including Austerville, are still without electricity.
The massive power outage occurred on Thursday afternoon (November 13). In some areas electricity was restored by 16:00 while others had power return only at 22:00.
According to eThekwini Municipality, the 33/11 kV substation has experienced a total loss of supply on both its incoming circuits.
“One of its 33 kV supply cables is currently out of service due to an oil leak, while the alternate circuit tripped earlier yesterday, resulting in a complete loss of supply to the entire substation,” eThekwini said in a statement.
Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman confirmed that power has not been fully restored to other parts of Wentworth.
He said the teams are investigating possible methods to return one of these circuits to service.

The affected areas include:

  • Merewent,
  • Jacobs,
  • Austerville,
  • Wentworth West.
“As efforts to restore power continue, restoration of supply will be staggered throughout this evening until tomorrow morning as it will not be possible to restore supply to all affected customers at once, until at least one of the 33 kV circuits is returned to service,” eThekwini said in a statement.
