THE water supply may return as early as tomorrow (August 7) for Durban South communities, according to Ward 66 councillor Zoë Solomon. She said that of the four issues that were originally highlighted, there is only one issue left to restore.

The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that their technical teams are still working on the emergency repairs to the Wiggins High Pressure Supply Main. During the process, they discovered additional leaks that needed attention. To carry out these repairs safely, certain sections of the water network had to be shut off, which unfortunately led to further interruptions in supply for the South Ridge, Cato Manor, and Ridge View reservoirs.

Officials are hopeful that once this last repair is finished and the reservoirs have had a chance to fill up again, water service will resume. Solomon expressed her optimism, suggesting that water might return in the early hours of the morning.

Get water in the meantime

In the meantime, the Muslim Human Aid has stepped in to help residents by bringing in four more water tankers. These are located at:

• Noddys on Marine Drive
• Back of Fynnlands School Lighthouse Road
• Donald/Turner
• DeJager corner Beach Road

Another tanker is available at Keegan’s on School Road.

For those who can access them, boreholes remain an option, and a new one has recently been set up at the mosque on Alabama Road in Wentworth. Sanitech has also provided portable toilets, which are being distributed to densely populated areas like the Arcadia Retirement Village.

eThekwini municipality working around the clock

The municipality is keeping a close watch on water levels in the reservoirs and how much water is being used. They are managing the existing supply carefully to help the system recover once the repairs are done. The repair work itself has been more difficult than anticipated due to the challenging terrain and the accessibility of the site, which has slowed down the overall progress.

The municipality has assured residents that water tankers will continue to serve these areas as much as possible until the regular water supply is fully restored.

Residents are advised to keep an eye on the eThekwini Municipality’s communication channels and ward councillors’ channels for updates.
