Woodlands water supply at risk after Southern Aqueduct leak
The municipality’s technical teams are monitoring reservoir levels and water demand to manage available water storage.
PARTS of Woodlands are likely to experience water outages after a major leak on the Southern Aqueduct pipeline was detected along Perth Road in Dawncliffe in Westville.
Residents and businesses in parts of the Central and Southern regions are advised that repairs are underway.
According to eThekwini Municipality, teams are making a detailed assessment of the affected section to determine the extent of the damage and the most appropriate repair methodology.

“The assessment found that the repair is complex due to the deteriorated condition of the prestressed concrete pipe (PCP), which forms part of the old Southern Aqueduct system. The condition of the ageing pipe requires a specialised sealing system to be installed from inside the pipeline to enable the technical teams to safely and effectively carry out the necessary repairs. This specialised work is currently underway,” read a statement.
The assessment and preparation required before the repair could commence have contributed to the time taken to complete the work.
The municipality said it acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the reduced water flow and appealed to affected residents and businesses to remain patient while the technical teams continue with the repair.
While the repair is underway, there is a reduction in water flow through the Southern Aqueduct system.

As an interim measure, reservoir outlets are being temporarily closed at strategic times, mainly during the evenings and after the morning peak demand period.
This allows the technical teams to preserve and build up water storage in the reservoirs.
Once sufficient storage has been recovered, the outlets are reopened to allow water to flow to the affected areas.
Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this period.
“As part of a long-term solution, the municipality is progressing with the upgraded Southern Aqueduct, which is expected to provide a more reliable and resilient bulk water supply system once completed. The upgraded Southern Aqueduct will significantly improve the reliability of the system and is expected to minimise recurring pipe bursts and leaks associated with the ageing infrastructure.”
The municipality urged residents not to interrupt or visit construction workers on site without prior arrangement, as unannounced visits may disrupt the repair work and compromise the safety of residents.
Residents seeking updates on the repair work are encouraged to follow the Municipality’s official communication platforms or engage the Community Liaison Officers from the Water and Sanitation Directorate for further information.
Affected areas include:
Bayview, Coedmore, Havenside, Phumphele, Umhlathuzana, Woodhurst, Woodlands and Yellowwood Park.
