eThekwini Municipality to install smart meters

The City plans to install 350 000 by 2024.

THE eThekwini Municipality is rolling out smart meters as part of its Smart City strategy.

According to the video posted on the eThekwini Municipality’s social media page, the City plans to eventually have smart meters installed in every single house within its perimeters.

“Over 70 000 smart meters have been installed, and the City plans to install 350 000 by 2024. Dedicated teams have been assigned across all regions to replace old meters and install new ones.“

The municipality shared the following tips to their customers to avoid imposters from entering their premises:

  • A permanent employee must produce an identification card that has their name, surname, photo and service number, and they must be wearing blue overalls. However, the contractor will be wearing red overalls.
  • Their identification must state that they are subcontracted under a company working with the municipality.
  • Their identification card must include the expiry date of the contract.
  • The employee or contractor on site will have documentation pertaining to the meter change.

The municipality urges customers to always request identification. It also implores customers to cooperate in order to assist the municipality to achieve its goal.
