Man nabbed with copper cables, streetlights gets bail

Police found 56.1kg of burnt copper cables, with the street value of about R230 000, and 14 streetlights at his premises.

A MEREBANK man was charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen, after over R200 000 worth of burnt copper cables and streetlights were found at his premises recently.

Yuvesin Chetty, 39, was arrested after he handed himself over to police and was granted R5 000 bail in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court. He is expected back in court on June 7.

Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, the spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), said its members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation, received information about copper cables that were suspected to be owned by eThekwini Municipality.

“The member then applied for a search warrant and proceeded to the premises. A search was conducted and 56.1kg of burnt copper cables, with the street value of about R230 000, were found. The members also found 14 street lights and an electronic scale.

“The occupants of the house provided a reasonable explanation regarding the owner of the copper cables and he was contacted. Chetty handed himself over and he was charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen and damage done to essential infrastructure in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act,” he said.
