Two armed robbers arrested after shoot-out on The Bluff

FOLLOWING a shootout, two of five suspects who opened fire on security officers during an armed robbery were arrested and charged after officers shot out their rear tyres, causing the vehicle to spin out of control.

Tactical officers from Security Force were conducting their routine patrols on The Bluff when they heard a woman screaming for help at about 04:30 on October 18.

Spokesperson of the Brighton Beach Police Station, Captain Louise le Roux, said Prabakaran Govender and Randall Littering, both Security Force officers, were patrolling along Bluff Road when the woman screamed out desperately for help.

“They then observed four men in a struggle with the woman. The men then fled in a Black Ford Fiesta.

“When the officers attempted to engage the occupants, they responded by opening fire at the security vehicle. A chase ensued. As the pursuit continued in the direction of Clairwood, the occupants continued to fire at the officers.

“The two-man team responded by shooting out the rear tyres, causing the vehicle to spin out of control as it entered Archery Road.

“Two suspects were arrested while the other three evaded arrest. The valuables that were stolen from the woman were recovered.

“We commend Govender and Littering for their prompt response and persistency, which led them to secure arrests,” Le Roux said.

The vehicle was seized and will be handed over to the Asset Forfeiture Unit as it was used in the commission of the crime. Police are continuing their search for the remaining suspects.

“Through stakeholders in the security industry, we, as the police, have created partnerships that support the fight against crime within the Brighton Beach policing area,” added Le Roux.
