Community rallies to support two young children after the loss of their granny

Donations and financial assistance is needed for two young children who lost their mother and grandmother to illness.

IN a heartbreaking turn of events, the community of The Bluff is coming together to support two young sisters, Taylor (4) and Madison (9) Bateman, who have faced yet another tragic loss with their granny and sole caregiver Marie Bateman passing away on February 24.

Bateman’s health took a sudden turn when she fell ill and was admitted to Wentworth Hospital. Medical assessments revealed she was battling both an enlarged heart and hepatitis, conditions that proved too formidable to overcome.

Bateman, who had selflessly dedicated herself to raising her granddaughters after the passing of their grandfather three years prior and their mother in 2022, succumbed to her illnesses, leaving Taylor and Madison under their father’s care.

“Marie was a wonderful woman who took care of many children and was always ready to help anyone. She was like a granny to many kids, including mine,” reminisced Leeann Amas, a close friend of the family.

With Bateman’s unexpected passing, the responsibility of caring for Taylor and Madison falls heavily on the shoulders of the community. “Marie was not working and was taking care of the girls with only her SASSA,” said Leeann.

In light of these circumstances, an urgent call for financial assistance has been made to ensure Bateman receives a dignified farewell and to support the ongoing needs of the household. “We are in urgent need of funds to ensure we can lay her to rest and see to other needs at the house,” said Leeann.

Bateman’s funeral will take place at 10:00 at Stellawood Crematorium, 100 Selborne Road, uMbilo, on March 5. All members of the public are welcome to come through and pay their final respects to Bateman.
