Teenager (19) shot dead in drive-by shooting in Wentworth

The suspects fired several shots towards the victim and his friends. One person sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and died in hospital.

A 19-YEAR-OLD youngster was shot dead in Wentworth in a drive-by shooting on Sunday afternoon (November 17). The victim and some friends were sitting at the side of the road on the corner of Richard Win and Tifflin Roads, when they noticed a black VW Golf drive slowly towards them.

Police spokesperson for eThekwini District Captain Carmen Rhynes said there were three suspects in the car.

“Suddenly the passenger of the vehicle started firing shots at them. The friends managed to flee the scene, however, the victim was shot in the stomach. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival,” said Rhynes.

The three suspects in the vehicle fled the scene shortly after the shooting. Police said the motive for the attack remained unclear.

“Wentworth detectives are investigating a case of murder,” Rhynes added.

Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said their tactical response team was alerted to the shooting and acted swiftly.

“It’s still unknown why the shooting occurred, and the suspects are unknown at this stage,” said Govindasamy.

Community leaders call for a ceasefire in shooting

Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman called on the members of the public to stop this senseless killing of others.

“It’s very sad that we have to keep experiencing such violence in our community. When are all these shootings going to stop? Children are killed for no reason and I find this unacceptable. Whoever is behind the killing of people in Wentworth shows the kind of characters we have in our community. These criminal activities must stop.

“There are some innocent people that are getting shot and this is reprehensible. I am pleading with whoever is doing the shootings, or instructing the shooters, to stop these senseless incidents. Our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and others who have also lost loved ones. May their souls rest in peace,” said Snyman.

The Wentworth area has previously been grappling with the increasing number of violent incidents
  • On May 21, a 16-year-old teenager lost his life after being shot by two unidentified assailants.
  • Another incident happened on July 16, whereby a 17-year-old boy was killed and a 21-year-old man sustained severe injuries.
